This might be caused by a third-party filter driver. See this post by

I have seen some reports about Adaptec Take 2 software causing this.Do you
have that installed?

Usually this type of error is when a driver, service, or app is preventing
hibernation from taking place. Is there an associated event ID?

Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MS]

You may use DriverQuery tool to list out all the device drivers installed in
your system.
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/driverquery.mspx

-or-

Use "LoadOrder" to view/copy the device driver list:
http://www.sysinternals.com/files/LOADORD.ZIP

Feedback from Lukas:

" I had a dvd simulation application installed and I uninstalled it and it
worked. Maybe it had something to do with adaptec...no matter what, it
was that what prevented system from enabling hibernation. "

Ramesh, I have an S3 display installed on the laptop, could this be the
problem, and if so, how can I fix it?

Don't know, Jakes. But you an check if there are unsigned drivers in your
system.

How To Verify Unsigned Device Drivers in Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308514

And Autoruns (www.sysinternals.com) can be used to manage startup programs,
services and drivers.
