Cannot Empty my Deleted items folder

G

Guest

When i go to empty my Deleted items folder, I get the usual message "Are you
sure you want to permanently the contents of the 'Deleted items' folder?" - I
click OK, and then nothing happens.

I have tried manually deleting the emails in my deleted items folder, and i
am able to delete some, but not all.

I see someone else had a similar problem with mail in their Outbox, and i
followed the link to the suggested patch for that, but did not download
because I do not know if I have Vista 64-bit or 32-bit (How does one know
which version of vista they have?? I only know i am running Vista Business.)

Thank you for any help you may have for me!

Aloha!

p.s. My system is also sounding like a race car. If you tilt it sideways or
vertically, sometimes it will shush up - but it's rather difficult to work on
a laptop when it's standing on it's head. Any advise on this? Acrobat
lessons perhaps? :p

Chance are pretty good you have the 32-bit version.
Go to Control Panel, System applet, and it will tell you if
your OS is 32-bit or 64-bit.

If you have to ask, it's 32-bit, but to be sure:
Click Start.
Right click Computer.
If it's 64 bit it will say so.

Open the computer and see what the fan blades are hitting.

Thank you both for your speedy responses!

I confirmed that my Vista is 32-bit, then downloaded the patch which was
recommended to the person who was having similar problems with deleting mail
from their inbox, but it did not resolve my problem.

I'm still unable to delete the contents of my Deleted Items file. :-(

Any tips on what may be causing this problem? Anyone else experiencing this
same issue?

Many thanks again!

Hi Janna-

I am having the exact same problem- any suggestions anyone? What patch are
you talking about? This is so frustrating! Everytime I click on empty deleted
items, a new message box pops up, as if I want to write a new message!
Thanks for any help anyone can give!

Messages may be stuck in the Outbox when you use Windows Mail on a computer
that is running Windows Vista
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941090
It also works on other folders.

Assuming that after downloading the patch you installed it, I have no idea
what's wrong.

OK, well I appreciate your time - thank you so much for your help!

If anyone else should come across a solution to this, I sure would
appreciate it!

I've had the same problem and was able to remove the deleted emails by right
clicking on the deleted items folder and then selecting empty deleted items
folder. The emails were deleted one at a time. Not elegant but it worked.

I have been plagued with this bug since I installed Vista. Nothing seemed to
work (& I'm not scanning mail with any a/v program). But I have found that
there seems to be a connection with which folder is being viewed when the
empty is attempted. I have ensured that any folder OTHER THAN the deleted
items is selected & then right-clicked the deleted items folder & emptied.
It worked & remains functional. I have "empty on exit" selected & ensure
that the deleted items folder is not selected when I close Windows Mail. So
far it has worked as described on the tin.

I wonder.... ?

Interesting how different techniques work for everyone.
Right clicking on Deleted Items folder & "Delete all" does not work for me
no matter which window/folder I am in.

However, the patch recommended by Gary at least made it possible to go in
and manually delete my emails. (I was unable to even manually delete any and
all deleted emails before installing the patch!)

So... I suppose I am stuck with simply manually deleting my emails (or
trying Windows Live Mail, which i'd rather not) until a new patch comes
along. For now, I am just happy I am able to permanently delete emails at
all.

Thanks everyone so much for all the feedback on this!

Thanks for this, I have the exact same problem as you, I am only running
Vista for the last 3 months and never encountered it before this week. Going
to try the patch (suggested) and see if it may work better for me (finger
crossed)

The most recent issue of PC World has an article on this topic.

Interestingly enough, I am now able to delete my "Deleted Items" contents
without any problem. So, my suspicion is that I had a "stuck" email (read
more about this in PC World). Once i got that "stuck" email dislodged, it
hasn't been a issue for me any more.

** I did not follow all the suggestions printed in PC World to remedy this.
I simply deleted the email manually. But if you're still experiencing
problems, I'd recommend you take a look at that article. :)

Hoping your problem is as simple as mine was. Good luck TriniGonzo!

Is that PC World article available online, or only in the print edition?

I am facing the same issue as Janna and more then 1500 emails are stuck in
my deleted folder and no one could hate Gates more then me for inventing this
horrid application. I spend my lifetime saving buying sony notebook with
Vista and I regret every single living moment.

Don't blame Mr. Gates. He has no control over the junky programs
that others offer for sale. This problem is caused by you using a
non-compatible antivirus program. (More about that below.)
To solve the immediate problem, apply the Microsoft fix:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090
"Messages may be stuck in the Outbox when you use Windows Mail on a
computer that is running Windows Vista"

Although Outbox is the only folder mentioned, it will remove stuck
messages from all folders.

To prevent a recurrence of this problem in the future, you will need
to change to a different antivirus program.
Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee or Norton
security programs. Those will need to be uninstalled, not just disabled.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download
and install a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their
email scanning option turned off. For more on this topic see

I cannot understand why MS does not have a fix for this yet. It seems to be
everywhere.

I have attempted the kb mentioned above. No joy.
I have attempted to repair. No joy.
I have attempted to reinstall. No joy.

People have mentioned some PC magazine article. What was in it?

I now have some 70 emails in my deleted folder and it is climbing.

I just got it to work!

I had downloaded the kb fix BUT you need to move everything back to your
inbox and then redelete emails and it works.

As for the anit-virus comment below - it is completely wrong to think that
uninstalling the most used anit-virus softwares in the world is a proper
solution. MS needs to come up with a real solution to this issue. Otherwise
people like myself will move off Vista (I am honestly thinking about it).
