cannot download MS updates

Hey guys, hope you can help.

Background: LAN running both win 98 and xp pro boxes;
two different agencies on the same network. On the part
I'm helping to support I was installing brand new out of
the box gateways running xp pro, didn't even have time to
run the updates on the first machine before blaster hit.
I cleaned up the machine, downloaded the patch on a
floppy and updated it, installed Norton Corporate, ran
live update and updated from MS update site.........now
the problem.......on NONE of the machines new and old xp
boxes (they're clean - i ran blaster fixit as well as
norton scan to double check) I can update from MS update
site......it identifies what patches are needed but when
I set out to install them, it runs through the file names
but 0 bytes are downloaded then it gives me the failure
to install message! Any idea are GREATLY appreciated!!!
I suspect that some of the other xp boxes on the network
maybe infected would that prevent me from running the
download install from MS site? I can download individual
patches but can not run the live update where it installs
from the site.
