cannot delete a file

i have a icon on my desktop that i want to get rid of but
when i try to delete it windows tells me it cannot be
deleted because it is being used by another person or
programs is there anyway to get around this?

You need to close startup applications, one of them is
accessing the file structure.
To do so select start task bar / run msconfig.exe

select startup tab, select disable all. Then delete your
desktop icon, then renable all.
