Cannot defragment

I have a 40% fragmented drive (300gb), vista defrag tool does not complete
the job of defragmenting. I tried another defragmentation tool and it tells
me that my drive is locked, how do I unlock it?

Does vista defrag "start" the job of defragmenting? (print out an analysis
when you try defrag.exe from an administrator command prompt?)
Also, if you have less than 10 or 15% free space, defrag will have to work a
lot harder and will work a lot more slowly.

I can't speak for other tools having problems with a locked drive....

I had the same problem with Diskeeper the other day. I found it was because
the system had flagged the drive as suspect and I needed to run 'chkdsk /f',
which of course won't run until the system reboots. But in my case, even
then it didn't run.

Anyway, the only way to clear the flag is to get chkdsk to actually run. So
I had to boot from the Vista DVD and start a command prompt from there (AKA
recovery console). That fixed my problem.

How do you know your drive is partially fragmented. I can't get Vista to give me any kind of
report.
It only says your disk was defragged on mm/dd/yy

T5, I have it!!!

At an Administrator command prompt:
fsutil volume dismount X:

Where X: is the locked volume. This should force an unlock, and it should
fix your issue with Vista defrag (and the other tool). Please try Vista
defrag first and let me know if it works or not.

The issue: locked volumes can only be accessed through the object that
locked them, and defragmenters try to access files normally (not through the
object that locked them).
