I have a W2K-Pro disk that I have recently changed the
identity of (prior user left, so I changed the identity
instead of wiping it out and starting over). I have also
given everybody administrator rights on the machine. I
have done this by adding/deleting users and changing the
machine's network identity.

Now, I cannot defrag the volume beause it says it is a
read-only volume.

Is this an ownership issue? Have you logged on as
administrator and then taken ownership of the disk. If
you do that you should be able to change the read-only to
change or full control.
