Cannot extend volume

Alex

Hi,

I upgraded a WinNT 4 to Win2K recently, I changed the
disk from basic to dynamic, when I try to extend a
volume, I get the following message:

"The selected volume was originally created on a basic
disk and cannot be extended. Only volumes originally
created on dynamic disks can be extended". I try also
with VolumeManager but no luck.

CAN ANYONE SUGGEST A SOFTWARE (FREE OR NOT) TO DO THE JOB.

Thanx

Alex

A partition on a basic disk keeps a record in the partition table. The
tools included in Win2000 cannot change the partition table entry, and
therefore cannot extend the volume. This MS Knowledge Base article
explains:

As far as I am aware, there are no third party tools, except possibly
"VERITAS Storage Foundation for Windows", that can extend a volume on a
dynamic disk, and it still has restrictions on the system volume.

If you have a backup since before you upgraded to dynamic disk, restore it,
and then use diskpart.exe from "safe mode with command prompt" to extend
the partition. This MS Knowledge Base article has more information:

Alex,

I use Partition Commander Ver 8 from V-Com. It cannot extend a dynamic
disk. However, as a possible alternative, it can convert a dynamic disk
back to basic. Once converted, you can do most anything you want.

See www.V-Com.com

Big caveat: HAVE A FULL SYSTEM BACKUP prior to using this type of utility.
At the very least, backup all important data. Preferably utilize an imaging
utility such as Norton Ghost (my favorite), Symantec Drive Image or Acronis
True Image.
