cannot copy files from a thumb drive to the hard drive?

I am trying to copy files from a phillips usb thumb drive to my hard drive.
I keep getting the error which states that the drive cannot be accessed. I
can click on the thumb drive and open files though. I just cant drag them to
a new folder on the hard drive or copy / paste to the hard drive. I'm new to
XP, so any help would be apprieciated.

Sometimes a thumb drive will have a physical switch on it to write protect
the drive.
