microsoft has an article purporting to fix this problem
but it didn't work for me. whenever i try to connect to
help and support windows update i get the
message "Internet Connection is Required...To connect to
the Internet now, click Connect." even though i have a
broadband connection. i have this problem with several
other programs as well. for example photoworks is a
program that allows you to upload pictures for developing
but it doesn't connect either. i have fiddled with some
registry settings a while ago but i dont want to do a
system restore b/c too many things have been changed
since that time. does anyone know which registry settings
may be causing this problem. thanks in advance

Hi,

I hope that you are not usin any firewall or any internet
security software. If you have a CD to reinstall the
firewall and/or Internet Security Software. Then try
uninstalling it. Then ty to use these softwares. If they
work fine then you know the reason.

You may also restart the computer and press "F8" from the
beginning then choose "Safe Mode with Networking" from
the "Windows Advanced boot options" window and then press
Enter two times. Then when you go to the Welcome screen,
logon as Administrator or your user account, and then
check if you can work on these programs fine or not. If
you can then you know that most probably it is the
firewall or internt security software installed on this
computer.

BEST OF LUCK!

I hope that you ARE using a firewall. It's dangerous to connect to
the Internet without a firewall, because hackers and worms could get
into your computer. I've seen a breakin occur within a few seconds of
connecting when no firewall was in use.

If you have a broadband router, it acts as a firewall, and you don't
need a software firewall.
