I recently replaced a failed hard drive, so all the software on this SONY
PCG-FR130 laptop if fresh and mostly up-to-date. It runs XP Home and Service
Pack One. I have run the network setup wizard many times both in this method
and even a few attempts after Service Pack Two. Currently I thought I'd
start from scratch and remove Service Pack Two. I have ordered my network
devices propperly in the advanced tab in network connections and refuse to
bridge any of them. I only have the four component initially installed in
use for both devices, including file and printer sharing. Whether I use the
built in ethernet or my wireless lan external card, I cannot connect to any
network, whether my own or The University of Arizona's network. I can access
the internet with any device and on any network. I cannot see any other
computer, whether in my workgroup or not. I have a unique network id.
Rarely will it even let me open the MSHOME workgroup folder, let alone the
one above it in the hierarchy. Once I was able to see a single other
computer, but that took a few minutes to see and I still could not see it's
contents. I am sharing multiple folders. I can "remote desktop connection"
another computer only if i access it by ip and not by computer name on the
microsoft network. This is a personal PC on a school network or lower level,
so I do not require any special vpn devices to connect to a land line
ethernet. Can anyone give me a leg up on this one? I'm at my wits end and
going mad. I might even pursue computer sciences for a major just to figure
this out. Thanks for reading my life story.
