cannot complete reinstall of XP - no activation screen

XP crashed and after XP repair didn't work, I decided to do a clean install
from the XP CD that came with the laptop. Everything seems to go smoothly and
it launches Windows, but there are no devices, network, volume, etc
available. The only icons in the lower right hand corner are the red "no
anti-virus" alert and one to take the Windows XP tour.

According to step-by-step instructions of how to do a clean install, I
should immediately get a Windows Activation screen asking me for the key.
I've tried three times to do a clean install and this never pops up - it just
gives me this naked version of windows.

Any idea how to fix this?

Btw these are the step-by-step instructions that I checked with on my last
attempt - http://www.5starsupport.com/tutorial/xpinstall.htm

Everything goes fine, but no activation screen ever pops up.

thanks,
Amanda

If your Windows XP is a BIOS Locked OEM version then it is
self-activating on the proper hardware.

I would suspect that your clean install is complete. Use Start - All
Programs - Accessories - System Tools and look for an "Activate
Windows" entry on the menu. If it is not there then your OEM version
is BIOS Locked and does not require activation.

Good luck

Your laptop would have likely come with a drivers & applications cd also -
maybe two -
If you cannot find this cd you should go to your laptop manu site, and
locate downloads for your specific model.
There will likely be chipset/graphics/touchpad and other drivers.
Do NOT use winupdate for drivers.

This was exactly the problem... I found the second CD with drivers and
applications, and everything works now :) Thanks.
