Cannot capture with JVC, XP and Firewire

I have a new dell PC(XP SP2) and relatively new JVC GR-D20 (bought in
ireland)camcorder with firewire. I bought a firewire card and
cable...nothing! Like the camcorder wasn't there. Everthing showed up fine in
the device manager. Thinking it was the card brought it back and was given a
new one. Nothing again. In movie maker it just told me nothing was
there(camcorder was set to play and everything-I also tried evry combination
of turning things on & off in different sequences). After a lot of searching
on the net I realised the problem was quite common . Some found that JVC
worked with TI chipsets so I duely swapped the card for an Adaptec
fireconnect 4300(with TI) and got another cable just in case. I also used
Sonic MyDVD sofware as well as Movie maker just in case it was the software.
My Camcorder might as well have been in China as far as my computer was
concerned. I have also gone through quite a few steps recommended on other
forums including this one. My camcorder may find itself in the back yard
soon(and the PC may join it). This stuff shouldn't be happening.
Any final suggestions before the equipment gets it?!

Thanks graham for reponse. Do you mean a xp noise when I hook up the
camcorder? No nothing happens. No notification that any device is connected.
