cannot adjust the font in footnotes subscript

i'm not having a problem with adjusting the font of the actual footnotes, i'm
having a problem with the actual numbers that are on the normal text. i
can't adjust them. i'm using word 2003. i go to format, style. i click
footnote reference (i've also tried footnote text), modify, then font and
i've tried everything but every font i select, alters the whole document. i
don't understand why i can not simply adjust the font of the only the little
numbers rather than adjust the font of the whole entire document.

i've looked at these sites
http://word.mvps.org/Search/SearchResults.asp?query=footnotes
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/macrosvba/UnSuperscptFnotes.htm
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/footnotefaqcontent.htm

for help but i can't seem to find anything that fits my question. right now
the footnote numbers on the normal text are really huge and it looks terrible

I assume you're just trying to change the font formatting to Superscript,
not actually change the font or font size? In any case, see if
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/WholeDocumentReformatted.htm has any
relevance (though I don't see how it would be applicable to an attempt to
change the Footnote Reference style).

that did not solve the problem. but i solved it through another means but
i'm afraid that i will run into the problem in the future. thank you very
much for your help

actually i have to solve this problem the right way because when i use my
other method new problems appear. on the document where the font of the
footnote reference is working right, in the style section under description
it says:

default paragraph font + superscript

on the doc where it is not working properly it says:

default paragraph font + font: 8pt, raised 3pt - and by the way when i
click on one of the numbers in text, font reads 16pt.

i would think if i could switch the footnote reference to default paragraph
font + superscript that that might solve things but i can't figure out how.

in any case i still have the problem that when i adjust the style of the
footnote reference it applies it to the whole document.

1. Right-click in any paragraph and choose Style... This will open the Style
dialog.

2. Change the display setting from "All styles" to "Styles in use."

3. Find and select Footnote Reference.

4. Press Delete. This will not actually delete the style (you can't delete
built-in styles), but it should reset it to the default Normal.dot
definition (Default Paragraph Font + Superscript).

If modifying the Footnote Text style changes the entire document, then
perhaps the entire document is in Footnote Text style? Or perhaps the other
styles are somehow based on Footnote Text? This seems very unlikely, but it
is the only explanation I can think of.
