Cannot access Yahoo.com, Google.com & some other sites

Currently running Win98SE w/ IE6 (SP1, 128bit). Using MS
dialup connection to access ISP/internet. Was working
fine, then began to experience the following:

Upon starting IE (Yahoo.com is designated home page)now
receive "Page cannot be displayed / Cannot find server or
DNS error". Receive same message when attempting to
access Google.com.

When accessing web sites with graphics (like virtual
tours), instead of the picture being displayed, a small
icon with a red square, green circle and blue triangle
appears.

I can "ping" yahoo.com from the command mode & receive a
reply.

Any thoughts?

HOSTS file problem?
Look also for a file named HOSTS (no extension, could be hidden) rename it
OLDHOSTS, reboot.
