Cannot access windows update and Java errors

System is WXP SP1 w/ IE 6.0 with patches applied thru
February '04. When running Windows Update through IE or
from the shortcut we get a partial page without Scan for
Updates choice.
When running an application on the web, code in the
status bar does not translate to labels as it does on
other computers.
