Cannot Access Win 95 Share From Win XP Pro

T

Tim Rogers

I have a Windows NT 4.0 based network that was, until recently,
composed of Windows 95/98 clients. I've recently added several XP Pro
computers to the network. I have a share on a Windows 95 PC that
cannot be accessed by Windows XP Pro PCs. I can see the share, but
when I try to open it I get an access denied error. This share can be
accessed by all of the 95/98 PCs on the network. All the 95/98 PCs
are in the same domain as the XP Pro PCs, and the permissions on the
95 PC's share appears appropriate. Any ideas what could be going on
here?

Thanks,

Tim Rogers

Hi Tim,

It seems like authentication problem.
1. Enable Guest Account
2. Uncheck "use simple file sharing" in Windows Explorer \ Tools \ Folder
Options \ View
3. If no password for admin is set, then Disable the "Accounts: Limit local
account..." in Local Security Settings \ Local Policies \ Security Options.

Hi Tim,

Thanks for posting!

Based on your description, I suggest you create a new share and assign full
access permission with no password and try again.

At the same time, on the Windows XP machine, follow the steps below:

Method 1:
==========

Disable the Internet Connection Firewall on the LAN connection:

Method 2:
==========

Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP:

1. Click from Start > Settings > Network Connections
2. Choose the local connection you use to connect to LAN.
3. Right click it and choose Properties.
4. Choose the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and press Properties.
5. Press the Advanced tab on the General tab in "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
Properties" dialog box.
6. Choose the WINS tab.
7. Choose to "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP".
8. Press OK.
9. Close all windows.

Method 3:
==========

Install IPX/SPX.

1. Click Start.
2. Right click the My Network Places and choose Properties.
3. Right click the Local Are Connection and choose Properties.
4. Press the Install¡ button and select the protocol.
5. Press the Add button.
6. Select the NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol from the
list.
7. Press Ok.
8. Follow the steps to complete the installation.

Please feel free to let me know if you have any further concerns or
questions regarding the issue.

Have a nice day.
