Cannot Access Web With Vista Running Under VPC 2004

In the Virtural PC Control Panel I have set the Adapter 1 to "NAT" per the
help, but still cannot access the web. My host computer is using a built-in
Intel Pro/Wireless 3945ABG Network connection.

Any suggestions?

Jim--

I don't know if this update will help you but it might. Go to
http://connect.microsoft.com and pick up the latest version of the Virtual
Machine additions designed for Windows Vista Beta 2.
To download the additions, log into the site, and sign up for the Virtual
Server 2005 R2 SP1 Beta if you're not already in it. In the downloads
section, you'll see the Additions for Beta 2.

He needs to do that, but wireless adaptors have been a pain point for some
VPC users, depending on the specific adaptor.

Chad & Colin -

I've added the MS Loopback Adapter to my Host XP machine and I downloaded
the VPC Additions for Vista Beta 2. Installing the loopback adapter was no
problem and I've shared my Wireless card internet connection, but I'm not
sure if the updated VPC Additions are installed.

After downloading the Vista additions, I followed the readme instructions
and ran the .msi file on the host machine. I then started Vista on the VPC
and per the instructions, went to "Install or Update Virtual Machine
Additions". After the install process began, it wanted to do an UNinstall
(of I assume the old additions). It got to a point where three processes
were running and needed to be closed. When I tried to close 2 of the 3, I
got "Access denied" and could not close them.

I selected "Ignore" and let the install finish. How can I tell for sure
that I now have the Vista Beta 2 Additions installed and not the original
ones that come with VPC 2004?

Bottom line, I still can't access the Web through Vista. Thanks for the
help so far!

I'm not using VPC with Vista although I have it Jim, and Colin and some
others probably have some direct dealings with it.

For the purposes of getting things up and running with VPC, why don't you
type secpol.msc into the run box and go to the 3rd from last item and make
sure it's enabled. Then later you can configurer it back or tweak UAC to
your liking. That should help with permissions.

I don't know if anything in this links will help you uncover something that
helps you get connected:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/833137/en-us

http://www.computerperformance.co.uk/vista/virtualpc2004.htm

"I found that the best setting for Network Adapter 1 was to select the host
NIC. In particular, this configuration cured a specific problem: Virtual
PC could not open the Virtual Machine Network Services driver, or The
Virtual Machine Network Services driver has failed to install."

Do you have any error when you try to surf or just get a 404 error? Type
eventvwr.msc in run box and click on application>hit arrow and see if any
entries speak to connecting, and do the same with system.

I am finally connected to the Internet. By using the Loopback Adapter on the
host and installing the VPC Additions for Vista Beta 2, I am able to connect
to the internet in Vista.

A couple of points for those who may read this thread:

1. The VPC Additions that come with VPC 2004 must be uninstalled in the
guest operating system (Vista) using its Control Panel. Then choose CD from
the VPC Menu and select Capture ISO Image. (Don't use the Install or Update
VPC Additions from the Action menu.) Find the directory (probably \Program
Files\Microsoft Virtural PC Additions) that contains the ISO file. Select it
and let it install without errors.

2. After that is done and if not already done, install the MS Loopback
Adapter on the host computer. Enable Internet Connection sharing for the
network card (in my case the Intel Wireless Adapter) and associate that
sharing with the loopback adapter.

3. In the VPC Console for Vista choose Settings and Networking. The first
adapter should be the Loopback Adapter, not the NAT suggested in the help
system.

That should get Vista to communicate with the internet under VPC 2004!
