Those of you wanting to run VPC on Vista take note:

Microsoft Connect, https://connect.microsoft.com/default.aspx?wa=wsignin1.0,
has an announcement about VPC 2007 beta 1 availability starting on October
11 (see under Coming Soon). Watch the site for an opportunity to apply for
this Connection on or after this coming Wednesday. Since VPC 2007 will be
free for the download after release it is likely that the requirement to
apply for the beta before downloading is merely a formality.

VPC 2007 will support Vista (both x86 and x64) as a host and it will support
Vista x86 (only) as a guest. One change from VPC 2004 is that a Vista guest
will have sound support.

This will be the first edition of VPC to run on a 64bit host and both Vista
x64 and XP Pro x64 should be supported hosts (and their Server
counterparts).

Before you ask: 64bit guests and usb will not be supported in either
Virtual Server or VPC as standalone apps. Period. 64bit guests and usb
will not be supported until Microsoft virtualization technology is
integrated into Longhorn Server SP1 (approx 2009?). There has not been a
decision as to whether or not to integrate virtualization technology into
Vista (or for that matter, Vienna).

If you are using VPC in a production environment, be aware that the list of
supported Windows guest operating systems may change (one or two deletions).
Supported Vista host operating systems for VPC 2007 will be Vista Business,
Vista Enterprise, and Vista Ultimate.

"Supported" means supported by Microsoft Product Support Services. This
does not mean that VPC 2007 will not run on Vista Home Basic or Vista Home
Premium, they undoubtedly will. It just means that you are on your own with
problems if you run it on the Home sku's. The newsgroup for VPC questions
is microsoft.public.virtualpc. There will not be a separate ng for VPC on
Vista.

It just means that you are on your own with
problems

This has been the case anyway for all MS products...

I have had excellent support from MS PSS over the years. I can only
remember one issue that wound up with my having to reinstall Windows in
spite of PSS's best efforts. Not only do my questions get answered to my
satisfaction, but I often get follow up calls to make sure my issue is
resolved. I have never gotten that kind of service from any other company
with the exception of HP.
