Hi all,

I have an Intel Pro 100 network adapter which i use to
access the internet. Everything was working fine until
suddenly i cannot connect to the internet anymore. My
network adapter is only sending data without receiving
any. I scan with ad-aware and spybot for spyware but
nothing. I scan for any potential viruses again nothing.
This is really strange. The network adapter seems to work
fine but i cannot receive data. I did not install
anything new software to my system which will justify the
cause of the problem. The network adapter just stopped
receiving data all of a sudden. Any ideas please?

Thanks in advance for your help...

Yannis,

Please define "cannot connect to the internet". Try the following tests.

From a command window:
1) Ping www.yahoo.com.
2) Ping 66.94.230.33.
Report error messages.

From your browser:
3) Browse www.yahoo.com.
4) Browse 66.94.230.33.
Report error messages.

Next, try repairing your LSP / Winsock.
LSP-Fix and WinsockLSPFix <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>

AdAware and Spybot are not the only tools needed for detection and removal of
adware / spyware. Sometimes not the right tool either. All tools listed below
are free - you have nothing to lose but time.

Start by downloading each of the following free tools:
CWShredder <http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html>
CoolWWWSearch.SmartSearch (v1/v2) MiniRemoval
<http://www.safer-networking.org/minifiles.html>
HijackThis <http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3155>
Stinger <http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp?id=stinger>

Create a separate folder for HijackThis, such as C:\HijackThis - copy the
downloaded file there. The other downloaded programs can be copied into, and
run from, any convenient folder, except for Stinger.
<http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp?id=stinger>

Start by closing all Internet Explorer and Outlook windows, and running
CoolWebSearchSmartKiller, then CWShredder. Have the latter fix all.

Next, run Spybot S&D. First update it ("Search for updates"), then run a scan
("Check for problems"). Trust Spybot, and delete everything ("Fix Problems")
that is displayed in Red.

Then, run HijackThis ("Scan"). Do NOT make any changes immediately. Save the
HJT Log.
<http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=227>

Finally, have your HJT log interpreted by experts at one or more of the
following forums (and post it, or a link to your forum post, here):
<http://forums.net-integration.net/>
<http://forums.spywareinfo.com/>
<http://spywarewarrior.com/index.php>
<http://forums.tomcoyote.org/>
<http://www.wilderssecurity.com/>

If removal of any spyware affects your ability to access the internet (some
spyware builds itself into the network software, and its removal may damage your
network), run LSP-Fix and / or WinsockXPFIx.

Cheers,
Chuck

Mate first of all many thanks for helping me out with
this. Sorry for not providing any details in my first
post. I am a university student and i connect my laptop
to a network access at my hall. As i mentioned my network
adapter cannot receive any data only sends, all of a
sudden. It used to work fine. I also checked if the rest
of the network can see my laptop and that works fine. So
i guess it is not a hardware problem. Please check my
reply below with respect to your answer.
Yannis,

Please define "cannot connect to the internet". Try the following tests.

From a command window:
1) Ping www.yahoo.com.
2) Ping 66.94.230.33.
Report error messages.

For 1) i get: Ping request could not find host
www.yahoo.com. Please check the name and try again.

For 2) i get: Pinging 66.94.230.33 with 32 bytes of data:
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.

Ping statistics for 66.94.230.33:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss)
From your browser:
3) Browse www.yahoo.com.
4) Browse 66.94.230.33.
Report error messages.

For both of them i get: The page cannot be displayed...
Next, try repairing your LSP / Winsock.
LSP-Fix and WinsockLSPFix

I tried both of them mate but still nothing...

Yannis,

OK, no connectivity at all.

Please describe the router / WAP that you're connecting thru. Does it show
connectivity (to the internet AND to the computer)? Can you ping it
successfully?

Please provide ipconfig information for the computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.
Identify operating system (by name and version) too.

HijackThis, and expert advice, is the key ingredient in spyware detection /
removal. None of the other tools can be modified often enough to keep up with
the unceasing flood of spyware variants that are plaguing us right now.

But let's work on the connectivity issue right now.

Cheers,

Sorry mate but i cannot provide you any information about
the router since the IT guys from the university
installed everything in the hall. The only thing i can
see is a metal box up near the ceiling containing a
couple of hardware devices and lots of cables :) The
public computers that are available here are connected to
the same network and work fine. We have a number of two
connection points where we can connect our laptops and
gain access to the network. I tried connecting my laptop
to another cable by taking that out of a working
connection and it does not work on mine. Initially i was
able to connect to this network and gain access but since
yesterday it stopped working. As i already mentioned
before i can "see" my laptop using the public computers.
So my network adapter seems to be working. Sorry mate, i
realize this is probably not enough but i do not know
much about the network here myself.

Yannis,

OK, the router is 129.31.23.1. What do you get if you ping it from the laptop?

The laptop is (currently) 129.31.23.30. What do you get if you ping it from one
of the public computers? By name?

How about ipconfig from one of the public computers? Is there internet access
from the public computers?

Someone is responsible for the router. Have you asked for help?

I tried that and it gave me "Request timed out" all
packets lost.

It works. It receives all packets/no loss.
How about ipconfig from one of the public computers? Is there internet access
from the public computers?

Yes, the public computers have full access to the
internet. I tried one public computer's network cable
that was working on my laptop, but still nothing.
Someone is responsible for the router. Have you asked
for help?

I haven't asked anyone as of yet. Since the problem
occured yesterday i thought that i might be able to
tackle it myself using resources like this newsgroup. If
i dont manage to work it out i will go to the IT guys at
uni. Seriously though is this problem strange?! I am
absolutely sure that i haven't done/changed anything to
my machine. I always have the latest virus/spyware
protection and clean/repair my registry often. Really
weird :(

Anything else to propose on this problem Chuck?

Thanks a lot for your time mate!

Yannis
