it couls be mtu issue. quoted from http://www.ChicagoTech.net
Can't access some web sitesSymptoms: 1) If you're using MS ICS or Windows
server as router to access the Internet, your clients may not be able to
access certain web sites. However, the ICS host or the server doesn't have
this problem.
2) After installed a new router or cable modem replacing dial-up to access
the Internet, you can't access some web sites.
3) You also find that most web sites you can't access are block to ping or
they are security sites using HTTPS.

Causes: 1) The problem occurs because many web servers block ICMP messages
and the packets are dropped. As a result, the requested web site doesn't
load.
2) This problem is caused also by an incompatible MTU networking setting.
You may try to install the latest SP. If you use MS ICS, you may want to
configure all your Client computers to use the new, lower MTU as the default
for all Internet communication. To modify the MTU size, locate the following
registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SYSTEM\ CurrentControlSet\ Services\
Tcpip\ Parameters\ Interfaces. If you use a router like Cisco DSL Router,
you may want to adjusting the PPPoE MTU Size. For example, to adjusting the
PPPoE MTU Size on the Cisco DSL Router, do

interface ethernet0
no shut
ip address <ip address> <subnet mask>
ip adjust-mss 1452

Hi Robert;

I'm experiencing a similar problem in that I am all of a sudden unable to
connect to some web sites, or I am unable to see all the content of a web
page (missing banners, missing icons or graphics). I have found a temporary
workaround and that is by specifying a public proxy server in my IE6.0
connection settings. Then all web sites come up just fine, this proves that
my web browser is working fine. Using a public proxy server for reliable
HTTP access is not a good option for me as my other HTTP dependent programes
will not operate through a proxy, or perform slugish through a proxy.

As soon as I turn the proxy server off, surfing web sites yields missing
content (icons, banners, pop-ups display "cannot be found" messages).
For example, ebay.com will come up, but without any of the banners or
addvertisments. With the proxy server, all banners and advertisements work
fine. I right clicked the properties of one of these baners and found out
that ALL ebay's banners come from a site called ebay.doubleclick.net so when
I turn the public proxy back on, I can go to doubleclick.net just fine,
without the public proxy setting, I get "page cannot be displayed". Similar
scenario with lycos.com and my inability to view banners on lycos.com that
are hosted by network.realmedia.com

Another test is when I ping this site (http://doubleclick.net or
http://network.realmedia.com) I get a reply from 127.0.0.1 (my local IP) but
if I ping the actual IP address for doubleclick.net then I get a proper
reply from 216.73.92.112. (see attached ping results). So why is the DNS
for doubleclick.net and network.realmedia.com and other web sites resolving
to my local IP and not the correct IP?

It looked like a DNS issue of my ISP. But I have the advantage to a house
with 4 computers to test with and my XP Home and W2K computers connected to
this SAME D-Link router are working fine! only my 2 XP Pro machines share
this same problem.

I have tried another NIC,
re-installed NIC drivers,
flushed DNS cache,
tried specifying static DNS servers instead of dynamic
tried static IP and dynamic IP.
tried alternate DNS servers (publicly available and private)

nothing works!

The closest I have come to an answer to my question is in your response to
AHT, but your advice to him does not directly apply to this scenario.
I checked chicagotech.net and could not find a scenario like mine their
either.

Any help or direction you can lend would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Arie

Arie,

Check your hosts file (%SystemRoot%\System32\drivers\etc\hosts) for such
entries. My hosts file has similar entries, because I use a hosts file based
blocking of adware and spyware known websites. The "127.0.0.1" address is
symptomatic of that.

Robert, you're a genious!

Would you believe Microsoft Tech Support couldn't figure this one out! I
paid them $40usd for them to tell me to re-download IE and uninstall SP2 and
re-install. Basicly, they would have had me destroy my system over such a
simple problem that was easily solved!

Thanks again;

P.S. I have 2 computers with this exact same problem, I'm thinking it was
"Kaza Resurection" that created the host file with so many entries in the
first place as I do not use any add aware software.

Thanks again for your help!

Hi,
I'm experiencing exactly the same problem as Arie here (or at least the same
symptoms). I found my hosts file but I'm not sure I understand what Chuck
suggested should be done with it. There is only one entry in the file and it
says 127.0.0.1. I tried deleting that entry but that didn't help. I tried
deleting the hosts file entirely but that didn't do it either. Any other
ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Jason

Jason,

There are two causes I know of why you could access some websites (but not
others).
1) Websites blocked by Hosts or proxy blocking.
2) MTU setting.

If your Hosts file has only the 127.0.0.1 entry (did you page down thru the file
until you absolutely hit the end of the file?), then Hosts file blocking
probably isn't it.

Check your MTU settings.
