Cannot access any web pages

A friend's PC is running Windows XP Pro, and using AOL 8.0 to access the
internet. The PC can connect to AOL (slowly) and access the AOL content ,
but if we try to access web pages from internet explorer once connected, or
from within the AOL software, we always get an error 'web page could not be
found', on all pages. The previous version, AOL 7.0 is still on the PC, and
if we connect using that, we can access the internet from within AOL, but
not from IE6 directly. I have tried connecting to another ISP using dial-up
networking, and get the same problem, so it looks like it is IE6 rather than
AOL that is causing the problem. I have tried deleting all temporary
internet files and clearing history etc, but still have the same problem.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
