OK, I posted this in the Internet Explorer group, but I
have since installed the Netscape browser with the same
results, so I don't think it is a browser problem! I
have a new laptop running XP Pro. I can access any site
on the Internet unless it is a site I host locally here.
I have two laptops connected to a LinkSys router, my old
laptop and my new one. My old one works fine and
accesses everything. My new one refuses to access any
local URL beginning with www. In other words, I can
access www.ebay.com and www.microsoft.com, but I cannot
access www.sitewerx.com hosted here. Unless I enter it
as just sitewerx.com. Or any other hostnames that don't
begin with www are OK. Like support.sitewerx.com or
mail.sitewerx.com. It's just local www.domainname.com
sites that I cannot access.

Even from a DOS window, I get the same results pinging
sites. If I ping sitewerx.com, I get results. If I ping
www.sitewerx.com, I get "Ping request could not find host
www.sitewerx.com. Please check the name and try again."
Pretty Strange!

And of course, on my other laptop, and every other system
here, none of this nonsense occurrs.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, you can email me
directly at (e-mail address removed) with any wild
possibilites you can come up with!

Thanks in advance,

John

What does nslookup in command window return for that name with or without
www. prefix? Check if there is anything odd in your Hosts file. Or maybe
try adding the names pointing to LAN IP of the server to see if that works
better (Hosts.sam is just an example of "Hosts" file, no file extension)

nslookup from a command window returns correct
information either with or without the www. This doesn't
make any sense! I hate to do it, but I am about ready to
format and re-install!

Thanks for the assistance, and still looking!

John
