I want to change out my computers old hard drive 8 gb.
to a new 60 gb drive
in the past I have used disk manager to do this and copy the files to the
new drive but
when I try this with xp pro it does not work

Can I do this so I can get rid of the old or use it for backups

the problem I see is that it does not allow me to change the new drive to be
a system drive.so that it looks to the new drive to startup windows. it
wants to find the old drive.

Mike-
be
a system drive.so that it looks to the new drive to startup windows. it
wants to find the old drive<<

The problem is that your old drive contains the *active* partition. You
could install one on the new drive with the Fixboot command from a Recovery
Console command prompt (type 'Fixboot /?' for details). An active
partition contains 2 files which are invisible, but which the computer looks
for at boot time to show the way to the boot loader.

A better way is Partition Commander or Partition Magic, which gives you a
way to remove the active partition on the old drive. Two active partitions
will make your PC schitzophrenic, so if you don't have a way to remove the
old disk's active partition you will have to unplug it from the IDE bus once
the new disk has an active partition.

Good luck,

Steve
