Can XP Pro create a new partition?

Is Windows XP Pro now sophisticated enough to allow creating a new partition
without destroying existing drive contents?

I would like to create a 150 meg partition on my Windows XP Pro laptop. I
have Partition Magic ver. 7 which works okay on Windows XP Home version, but
in Pro I get "Error 27 cannot lock hard drive" when Partition Magic does
it's mandatory reboot to start the partitioning process. My laptop is a
brand new IBM ThinkPad X40 and it does not have a floppy drive or CD ROM
drive. Thank you.

Update to version 8.

Does it have sort of optical drive?

XP Pro can on a clean disk.. incidentally, you could get a cdrom module for
your laptop..

Hi Jim,
Are you sure version 8 will do the job? I haven't seen that version 7 is
inadequate for this and I am reluctant to give Symantec another upgrade fee.
All that I have seen on Goolge regarding Error 27 advises booting to floppy
rescue disks. I don't have a problem booting and can abort Partition
Magic's process. Does that means that in addition to buying a new upgrade
for Partition Magic that I will also have to buy a floppy drive so I can
boot to it? Thank you.

Hi, Rip.

WinXP's Disk Management can easily create a new partition. But it cannot
shrink or split an existing partition. So, if your entire HD is included in
one or more existing partitions, there is no space from which DM can create
the new partition.

DM can delete a partition, so if you have storage space elsewhere, you can
backup the contents of your big partition, delete it, create 2 or more
smaller partitions in that space, and restore your backups.

Otherwise, Partition Magic seems the way to go.

(Your new laptop has NEITHER floppy nor CD? That's a new one on me! How do
you install new applications - like Partition Magic?)

Version 8 has better code that works with XP and NTFS.
Should work, prices have come down.
I have PM 8 and have never had an error.

Can't say what will happen with your machine.
You should run chkdsk on the drive and then defrag, this
should create empty space on the drive. Then select to
create a new partition and select part of the unused space
from the drive.
It has worked for me.

The X40 Thinkpad does have a card slot. To install Partition Magic without
a CD I simply copied the necessary folder to an SD card and then installed
if from the SD. I'm sure this will not be so easy with other apps but the
PM ver. 7 CD was pretty simple to figure out.

Yes with Windows Xp Pro and Home you can create multiple
partions. Usaully you would have to set up your partions
when you set up windows.I am not really sure if you can
without formating your drive or when windows is already
installed. The olny way I know of is when you install
windows or when you are setting up windows. You can email
me back at (e-mail address removed) or visit my site
it's www.cheaptechsales.com thanks and have a great day.
