Create new partition in XP-Pro?

Is Windows XP Pro now sophisticated enough to allow creating a new partition
without destroying the existing drive contents?

I would like to create a 150 meg partition on my Windows XP Pro laptop. I
have Partition Magic version 7 which works okay on Windows XP Home version.
But in Pro I get "Error 27 cannot lock hard drive" when Partition Magic does
it's mandatory reboot to start the partitioning process. My laptop is a
brand new IBM ThinkPad X40 and it does not have a floppy drive or CD ROM
drive. Thank you.

I don't think it is a question of being "sophisticated enough". Other
operating systems' partitioners don't do non-destructive partitioning
either. You will need third-party software to do non-destructive
partitioning. If you don't want to spend the money upgrading to PM 8
(which I know for a fact works very well on Pro), then check into
BootIt NG. I haven't used BING, but MVP Alex Nichol says it is
excellent.

No. IT will only delete, or create into Free/Unallocated space.

You need PM 8 to be safe on XP's version of NTFS. Or BootIT NG, from
http://www.BootitNG.com ($35 shareware - 30 day full functional trial)
which is intended originally as a boot manager, but has become a
comprehensive partition manager and will handle the matter. Don't
install it, just boot the generated floppy or CD and cancel Install,
entering Maintenance and use Partition Work

Good point. He can hook up the machine to a network and try copying over
the installation files from there. Or invest in an external cd drive.
