can the windows backup program compress?

does the (or is there an option to have the) windows 2000 backup program
compress it's backup file when using a disk file as media? If so is it an
option I need to enable or does it do it by default.

No, Ntbackup does not compress the backup file. You can, however, compress
the disk or folder where you store the file if you use the NTFS file
system.
