Can Start Up program order be changed?

Hello,

I am using a Microtek 3800 scanner on my system which goes through a reset
mode every time I boot up, causing certain icons to not appear in my system
tray...I have reinstalled according to Microtek feedback, but unless I unplug
the scanner the problem remains.

Is there a way to reconfigure the order in which the start up items are
loaded? And, would putting the scanner last on the list fix the problem?

Thanks in advance,

Hi Terry,

Unless the scanner is needed hourly/daily.....plug it when needed. As per
the rest:

1. Which icons aren't being listed as a result in the notification area?
2. Startup items can be literally numbered 1, 2, 3....
3. Have no idea.

Good luck!

Then their drivers are incompetent! Or, they did not update to be compatible
with Windows XP SP2.

You have little to no control of the startup order if you don't know how to
edit the registry. It is best to leave things as they are anyway, and get
the proper drivers from the device manufacturer. If they don't have any it's
time for a new scanner.

At any rate, it is Microtek's responsibility to correct this.

Hi Kelly,
Thanks you your response...
Okay, so how does one number the startup items?
TIA

Ooops...lost a thread there in my first reply...
Missing icons tend to change on a per boot basis...most affected are ATI,
SpywareGuard and Windows volume control, but I've had NAV2005 disappear, too,
plus the "Hide inactive Icon" feature tends to not function (meaning whatever
shows up stays visible).

While I'mon the subject...is there a way to clear out obsolete programs
from the
"Customize Notifications" box in the Taskbar properties "Notification"
feature? I't loaded with stuff I've long discarded.

Thanks again.
Terry

Hello Drew,

Thanks for the link...after all was said, seemed like the overall concept
was that it really can't be done with any certainty. Looks like I'll go
with Kelly's first and apparently best option: Unplug the scanner until
needed.

Appreciate all who responded,
Terry

Interesting indeed. I had read previous "startup order" advice and
didn't realize it relied on undocumented behavior that might change
in a future update just from performance tweaking.

The bottom-line advice was that the only way is to write a batch
file (or a script, I guess) and start everything yourself in the
desied order.

By the bye, I was intrigued to see Raymond Chen there. I knew him
on the net as a C guru back in the 1980s. Anything he says you can
take to the bank, in my experience.

Hi Wesley,

Thanks so much for the links...Kelly's little tweak did the trick and now I
have more cool places to get into trouble at.
