Deleting non existant device

Win XP SP2 Object: To install new Canon 4400F scanner. Problem: I can not
install a clean driver. I have downloaded auto-install from Canon. No matter
what I try all I get is an install with a yellow marker in the devices
window. I suspect an old instalation of my last scanner from Microtek is
preventing the Canon driver to install. Problem is I have discarded the
Microtek scanner and thus can not reinstall to delete from devices. I can
only see the microtek scanner when I go through using the command prompt to
view the device window and click on "Show hidden devices" When I try to
delete the Microtek device I get: "Failed to uninstall device. The device may
be required to boot up the computer" Now what? Any help or suggestions? I'm
very close to ckecking out my registry for any thing that says "Microtek" and
deleting it? This I know would bring me very close to reinstalation of my XP
OS

Bobbylew,

Non-existent services can be removed using the SC.EXE command-line. Open a Command Prompt window and type "sc /?" to know the list of parameters supported.

Warning: Be sure to create a System Restore point *and* registry hive backups prior to deleting a kernel service.

Have you contacted Microtek tech support for any help they might be able to
give on how to remove the driver?

I don"t think a driver is my immediate problem. How do I delete a device (ie
my old Microtek scanner) that does not appear in the device manager screen in
windows but will show in the device manager hidden files when using the
command prompt. That is when and where I get the message: "Failed to
uninstall the device. The device may be required to boot upthe computer" each
time I try to uninstall the device. I have uninstalled other devices on this
screeen in fact originally there was about six entries for the Microtek all
of which were deleted except this one?

Thank you Ramesh for your input. I would however like to be clear that my
problem appears to be that I"m unable to uninstall a device. It's like if I
had the old Microtek scanner and could reinstall it then I would be able to
uninstall. Windows however seem to insist that if there is no device attached
how can you remove it. Problem is I likely goofed and don"t have the Microtek
scanner any more and windows refuses to let go. Basicly when in the command
mode and showing hidden devices I get: "Failed to uninstall the device. The
device may be required to boot up the computer" each time I click on
uninstall.
