Can programs "run" when you're logged out of XP?

Let me give two examples. I have iPodder installed as well as AVG
Anti-Virus. When I

1. intentionally log out by going through the start menu, or
2. letting my account log out by itself by leaving the computer unattended
for 20 minutes,

do programs that I leave running actually "run." Will iPodder remain on
schedule and actually download feeds normally and will AVG continue to do
updates?

I've noticed in the latter case that when I log back on, I frequently get a
window saying AVG is done updating (with the press "ok" option) so I think
it's running.

What about automatic Windows updates when I'm logged off?

N.B., I keep the computer on all the time but it powers down to a semi-sleep
state (I think) after 20 minutes.

As you can tell I'm a little confused by all this behind the scene action of
Windows XP when loggin in and out, etc.

Thanks!

Boatman

Services continue to run while applications are typically terminated at log
off.

Depends on what function the process needs to perform. Services are
typically boot or system start and load drivers or processes that need to
run whenever the operating system starts. No experience with AVG but I would
guess it runs as a service.

Start|Run|services.msc to see if it is listed.
