Running scheduled tasks

Do I need to be logged in as the Administrator to run scheduled tasks? I am
the only user of my home pc. Hence I am the Administrator and when I switch
on the pc I am automatically logged on as Administrator.

With installed programs such as Windows or Norton Anti-Virus, do I have to
manually add them to a scheduled task list or are they automatically added as
Live Updates?

I have been having problems in that neither Windows or Norton Anti-Virus
seem to be automatically updating.

In my scheduled tasks I have added Windows and LiveUpdate (Norton). Ideally
I would just like them to run every time I am logged onto the Internet – I
typically only log on to the Internet for about 15 minutes at a time (to
send/ receive emails).

The Task Scheduler asks for “start time†(I put 06:45 as I’m often online at
that time) every day. They have “never†run.

What I am trying to find out is how to get such programs to automatically go
and look for updates every time I go online. Any ideas please?

You do not need to be logged into the built-in Administrator account to
run Scheduled Tasks; it needs to run under any account that has
administrative privileges.

Windows Updates and Norton Antivirus Live Update should be running
automatically. You do not need to add them as a special Scheduled Task.
If they are not running, you have other issues such as virus/malware
infection and/or a misconfigured firewall.

Make sure your computer is clean:

Since you have asked many basic questions, you may want to have a local
professional come on-site to check out your machine and give you a bit
of training. I'm not saying this to hurt your feelings but rather to
help maximize your productivity and enjoyment of your computer.

Hi Malke - thanks for the advice - I would love someone to come round and
help, but not an option! Hence, I'm trying to solve a few bits myself.
Certainly no offence taken - I appreciate all guidance given.

I logon as a user with administrator rights (I understand my Default
Administrator then becomes hidden) and thus now understand I can do all
"normal administration".

Then I start going round in circles a bit. My basic problem is getting live
updates to run automatically.

I am getting confused between XP "Services" and "Scheduled tasks".

I am having problems getting Windows/Norton/etc live updates to run
automatically - hence I had been trying to manually add them!

In "Services" I couldn't find anything that looked like it was running
Windows or Norton liveupdates (note: in "Services" it says "Logon as Local
System" (also confusing). So I tried adding "C:\WINDOWS\system32\wupdmgr.exe"
and "C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\LIVEUP~1\LUALL.EXE" respectively to the "Scheduled
Tasks" to try to get live updates. I have since removed them from scheduled
tasks to avoid confusion - all I have in scheduled tasks is Symantec Net
Detect (which I think checks for an Internet connection before looking for
Norton updates).

I was expecting both Windows and Norton to update automatically after they
were initially installed, but this is not happening. Norton thinks it may be
a "corrupted user account" issue (not sure why!).

Sorry the email got a bit long - would appreciate any further guidance you
can give.

As I said, Norton Antivirus should update automatically. If it does not
and is not running, then you either have a machine that is already
infected and/or other problems. Possibly you have a bad install of NAV.
There is no way for me to know from here.

Services are processes run by the system and third-party programs.
Scheduled Tasks are tasks that you - or a third-party program - choose
to run. They are not services.

Go through the virus/malware removal steps I gave you to make sure the
computer is clean. If it is, uninstall Norton and reinstall it. Or
uninstall it and try a different antivirus. Avast makes a free one.

How do you connect to the Internet? Neither Live Update or Windows
Update can work if you do not have an Internet connection.
