Can not install service packs

Hi,

I have a new computer which I ordered with XP home installed. I have
an upgrade CD of XP pro which I have used. I now have XP pro
installed. I have been able to get all the windows updates but I can
not get the service packs. The are not available in the download
center yet there is no sign of the service packs on my computer.

It is worth mentioning that this is a used copy of the CD. I bought it
for my old computer which I will no longer be using. I plan to use the
recovery CD and take the old computer it back to the original set up
which was XP Home once I get everything transferred. I am giving it to
7 year old son. He doesn't need Pro. I assume that the licence will
transfer from the old computer to the new one. Could this be effecting
the service packs?

Hi,

Have you activated it, and was the activation successful? Go no
further until you have achieved activation. You only get 30 days
to do it, then you have to start al over again.

Yes, they are available at the Microsoft Update site. Look again
for them. BTW, you do not need XP SP1: XP SP2 includes
everything that was in the XP SP1 plus all the new stuff.
You can either download the SP 2 or have it mailed to you on a
CD. If you're on dialup it's better to order the CD; it's a HUGE
download! Try searching the MS site for "SP2". I just got a lot
of hits doing that. The Search window was in the upper right
part of the page I was on; ymmv depending on which page you go
to.
It is worth mentioning that this is a used copy of the CD.

If it's the ORIGINAL retail version of the CD, you'll have no
problem. If it's a copy someone made, it's illegal and you'll
probably never get anywhere with it. From what you've said so
far it does NOT sound like an illegal copy. Be certain you write
down and save the keycode/s; you'll need it in the future,
guaranteed. By far the largest problem is people losing their
COA or keycodes. Store them in a safe place.

I bought it

No, that isn't affecting the service packs.

Putting the old computer back to its original Home version should
work fine, from what I gather from your description. Worst case,
when you try to activate it the last time, you might have to do
it by phone instead of online, but you get plenty of good
onscreen help and even the phone numbers if that happens.

No, your situation is not having any affect on the service
packs: You've just been unlucky in spotting them.
Try this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx . It should
tell you what you need to know and lead you to the download or
order area.

If you're still stuck, or confused, come on back and update your
situation. It's not rocket science, but it can seem like it
sometimes<g>.

Thanks so much for your reply.

I did activate it and was surprised that I didn't have to call in. I
have with other programs.

I had found the page you posted before. It does tell me I don't have
service pack 2. it then sends me to the update page where my system is
analyzed and then it doesn't offer it to me for downloading.

When I look for it on my system I don't see it.

Are there any files or something else I should look for to see if it is
indeed on my system? I don't believe it is but I could be wrong.

Anyway I will order the CD. Call me cheap but I hate pulling out a
credit card to pay for 3 dollars shipping.

Thanks

If you want to download SP2 (as an installable image) rather than trying
to update your computer to sp2 online try this ...

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en

By the way, had you selected 'Download and deploy sp2 to multiple
computers' on the page POP gave you it would have eventually taken you
to the same place. If in future you need to look for it again just
Google for 'XP SP2 network install'.
