can not install firewire pci card

I have a machspeed K8M8MS MB, amd 3700 64 cpu and running win xp serv pack2.
I have 2 pci firewire cards that will not install the drivers but does show
up as new hardware in device manager. I took both of these cards and tried
them in another computer and windows loads drivers flawlessly. I'm thinking
must be something in the setup in bios but can not find the problem. I have
tried several times and several things to no avail. I have even tried
removing all hardware and most software. 1 of the cards is an ultra ult31342
Ultra does not have drivers on a disk. I have called them for tech support
and also have called mach speed. I have tried the hotfix on microsoft site
also. Can anyone help? Been trying on and off for over 2 months now.

I did not try it in safe mode. The tech support guy just kind of blew me off
saying he couldn't help. I will try safe mode in A.M. and post back what
happens.

of fire wire card just shows up in device manager as pci card !

If you're trying to install one, two, or three cards; I'd stay out of XP and
work it at the bios level first. Once successful there, XP should have no
problems.
Other than the typical PCI slot/card musical chair thing, there's other
things you can do. Disable things in the bios you're not using like a com
port or 2, printer/parallel port, floppy controller, hardware as part of the
motherboard like LAN or SATA as examples. Then, if you can't get an
unshared irq to the Firewire card, try the musical chairs routine on the
slots.
Firewire and SCSI seem to work best, if at all in some occasions, if they
have an unshared irq at the bios level.

The irq is unshared in irq 5. Do you still recommend disabeling others? I

would like to add... not sure if it matters. the irq assignment is in
numerical order except for the irq 5. they are as follows.....
irq 0, 1,4,6,8,9,13,14,15,5,16,20,21,21,21,21,21,22,23

i went into bios, disabled sata, serial and modem. removed then reinstalled
card. Still will not assign drivers, says data invalid code 28. New irq is 12
and still not in numerical sequence.--
