can not fix broken file type association

M

michaeljnc

I am having a problem with double-click on .WAV files.
I'm getting the error message:
Windows can not open 'C:\Program\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe'
I have tried repeatedly to re-set the association so that it stores
C:\Program Files\...
but nothing has worked.
When right clicking on a .WAV and using either OPEN or OPEN WITH
in the context menu, they both work properly.

I have run numerous malware scans which have found nothing.

This is a minor problem, but I would like to fix this.

Thanks,
mjc

If one of the unspecified things was entering the location as "C:\Program
Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe" (note that the double quotation
marks are required),
I have no idea what is causing your problem.

I don't know what you mean by 'unspecified things'.
This error occurs in Windows Explorer when I double click on a
..WAV filename. The error message shows only Single quotation marks,
but when I have checked the association through
Tools -> Folder Options -> File Types
the assignment appears correct.
I have tried clicking the Restore button, but that did not work.
I have tried clicking the Change button and:
1) chose Windows Media Player from the suggested programs list
2) chose Browse and navigated to the wmplayer.exe location
Neither of these techniques has worked.

When I have a bad file association, I go to a menu bar in an open folder
and select [Tools > Folder Options]. On the Folder Options window, I
select the File Types tab. Then I scroll down until I find the
file-type or extension. I select the entry and then select the Delete
button. Then I select the OK button to close the Folder Options window.

Then I locate a file of that type and double-click to open it. I get an
Open With window for selecting an application. I check the "Always use
the selected program to open this kind of file" checkbox. I use the
Browse button to open an Open With file selection window. After
navigating to the application I want, I select it and select the Open
button. I then select the OK button on the Open With window to close it
and open the file.

Have you been using Netscape and now feel abandoned by AOL?
Then use SeaMonkey. Go to <http://www.seamonkey-project.org/>.

I have already tried that, several times.
I even typed in the full path and executable filename enclosed in double quotes.

I tried to find this association in the registry so I might repair it directly,
but I could not find it.

After reading the replys up to this point, I decided to do another search using Regedit.

I found the following entry and changed it from C:\Program\ to C:\Program Files\

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\wmplayer.exe

Now, double-clicking on a .WAV file opens Media Player, loads and plays the .wav file!

I found a few other 'broken' paths including one to:
C:\Program\Windows Media Player\ mplayer2.exe

None of these are a problem right now.

Thanks for your responses!!!

I find that I often make a mistake while typing a path. That's why I
use the file-selection window to navigate to the executable and select
it. That way, the path is created by Windows, not by me.

Of course, you must be able to locate the executable. Sometimes, it
will not be named the way you expect it or located where you expect it.

Yes, you're right. I did use the navigation tool probably about three times.
Typing it in was just another attempt.

Sorry about that. Since I had done it several ways, I got lazy and did not want
to write it all out.

Thanks for your help.
For now at least, I have it resolved through the registry tweak described in
my previous post.
