Can not download file with certain extensions.

I have a web page with a link to several files with various extensions.

When you click the link with any files with .doc, .pdf, .sit, .zip
extensions, a message box pops up asking if you want to save the file or
open. Or if you right click the links with above extensions, you have a
choice from the submenue to "save the target file as", but if you click the
link with .sitx or some other uncommon file extensions, browser says that
"can not find the file" or "file doesn't exist". However, if you change the
file extension of the ".sitx" file to ".sit" then, you can download the
exact same file (then after downloading, you need to change the extension
back to ".sitx" before you open the file.)

Does anyone know if there is a place where we can change the list of the
downloadable extensions?
Or this is something Windows does automatically and we are not able to
custome change this setting?

Hi Hiro

You don't mention which version of Windows you are using, but, try the
following and see if it helps:

In reset the correct file association for the files:

Open Windows Explorer
Find and highlight one of the files
Click Tools>Folder Options>File type
Scroll down the list until you find the file type you want the file to be
opened with
Click Change and then OK
Close and then try it again

Do this for each file type extension that is not working.

If the program that you want to open the file with is not in the list, then
you can add it by doing the following.

Highlight the file>right click>select Open with
If the program you want to open the file with is not in the list, click
Browse. Navigate to the program folder and highlight the application .exe
and click Open. Then check the box that says Always use the selected program
to open this kind of file
Then ok out

I have Windows XP Professional with Internet Exploror 6.0.
I tried with Netscape and Mozilla. Both browsers act the same. I can
download ".sit" file, but not ".sitx" file.

I added "sitx" extension as you suggested in the File type list, but still
doesn't work.
One thing I noticed -- ".sit" is not listed in the File type either, but I
can download the file no problem from the browser.

Are there any other suggestions?

Hi Hiroko

The .sit and .sitx files are proprietary archive formats for STUFFIT. If
you don't have that program installed on your machine you will likely not be
able to open it. Here is a link to a free program that may allow you to
open the .sitx file. You can download and install it and see if it will
work.
