Can not clear history

I've been trying to clear the address bar because there
are way too many websites listed. In the past, I've just
cleared the history and it has done it for me but the
past couple of days, it hasn't been doing that. When I
click on the expand button, it shows that there are no
websites listed but as soon as I begin typing, it lists
all the ones visited. Can anyone help me out?
