Can not backup using backup utility

I bought an external HD to back up my data. I tried to
use the backup utility that comes with XP. When I backup
the data it finishes really fast and the backup file is
only 780KB, where I know that the data I want to back up
is 9 GB. When I click on the restore utility there are no
files in the folders. The external HD is formatted in
FAT32 and the data I want to backup is in NTFS format.
Could that be the problem? Please help.

What are you checking ?? The drive and the system state ??
The format should not make any diffrence.

No just the "my documents" folder.
