Windows XP Backup Utility Question

I need some advice about the Backup Utility. I use WinXP Pro and am planning
to buy a new PC, also with WinXP Pro. I use the XP Pro Backup Utility to do
nightly backups of everyone's Documents and Settings folders to an external
USB HD. When I get my new PC, can I use these files (the ones created by the
Backup Utility onto the external HD) to transfer my Documents and Settings
stuff from old to new PC by just copying the file to the new PC and running
restore?

Actually the best back up utility in xp is the file transfer wizard, also what
microsoft techs rather use.Run the FTW from the xp cd,set as old pc,select
the files, settings, etc for it to save, save to a new folder you create, once
the
data is saved, move to cd or hd.

Thanks, but using the FTW and copying to CDs wouldn't be practical for me
because these nightly backups of Documents and Settings cover around 35 GB.
Would the FTW work okay with my external USB HD? I mean, I know I can copy
the files created by FTW to the external HD, but what about transferring from
the external HD to a new HD?
