Can no configure windows 98 for internet. PC do not see modem. There is
broadband cable modem, connected to my PC. (it intended to share cable TV
signal and internet). Internet signal comes to modem, but Internet Explorer
6.0 can no open any page; PC just do not see modem. IE Browser status bar
show 'Connecting to site: IP".., but no any page loads. ISP provider says
all is normal from their side, internet signal comes to modem. It recommend
replace windows 98 with win XP. But all worked normally on my previous
internet provider(LAN, broadband connection)

thanks

Win98 no longer good, Win98 dead - no longer supported by MS.

First run the "Create a new connection" wizard. The physical connection is
there, but Windows has not been told to use it.

If that doesn't work then, have your ISP "walk you through" the process of
removing the current connection and installing a new one. You probably
should have your Windows 98 CD-ROM at hand.

I used this win98 PC near five years in office and never had any problems.
It was configured for small LAN, internet connection was via ISP router
(broadband, via cable). Now i moved in another location and there is another
ISP, via cableTV(broadband cable modem). ISP say modem is already
preconfigured.
First ISP engineer connected modem and removed my previous connection
settings, but he dont used "Create a new connection" wizard, just set few
settings in 'Network' manually. This not help. He tried ping - ping is OK.
Next visit engineer replace two cable splitters, that split incoming singnal
between twoTVs and PC with better ones. This not help also. Third visit
engineer again replace splitter and suggested me replace my win 98 with win
XP, then "all should work". I found that I can send and receive mail via my
Outlook and Outlook Express(previous mail settings, account was configured
for LAN connection, free pop3 server)
But no any web pages loads.

If e-mail and ping is working I would check DNS settings
