Hi,
My brother has been trying to make it in Hollywood for ten years, and
has failed. I want to tell him to go into computer networking or
computer security (I'm in computer programming myself), but he says he
can't do math. He can do standard arithmetic, but he was completely
unable to master algebra, calculus, etc in high school. He's a bright
guy, but not in math.
So my question is, is algebra, calculus, or regular mathematical
thinking required to master computer networking or computer security?
Thanks,
HA.

Logical thinking is necessary to understand, set up, maintain, and
troubleshoot computer networks. There's no specific need for algebra,
calculus, or strictly mathematical thinking.

Too true. Abstract math seems to be a prerequisite of almost any kind of
college/uni course, yet it has zero relevance to most areas of human
endeavour - and that even includes many science disciplines.

Most laypeople also assume that 'math' means arithmetic, and therefore can't
see why it shouldn't be in every course. In reality it's about as relevant as
requiring ballet proficiency for a bricklayer.
