Can it be done?

I just tried to do an in-place upgrade from XPMC to Home Premium about 4
times & it failed all four times, not sure which program was doing it.
Anyway, I finally resorted to a custom (clean) install. I used a 3rd party
email backup program, but not sure if it will work in Vista now. Didn't
backup my messages by going to the folder & making a copy. I know that Vista
stores Windows XP in an "old" file. Would my messages still be there? If so,
how do I retrieve them?

Not sure if they are still there, but if they are you can simply search for
windows.old then open that folder and find your emails in there and drag em
to where you want them.
