Can I setup two different outline styles in the same Word document

Hi,

The problem is that I am writing a report in Word with a main section and
an appendix section. I want to have the outline numbering setup so that in
the main section, I have:

Section 1: Heading
1.1 Heading
1.1.1 Heading
1.1.1.1 Heading
...

Then in the appendix section, the numbering style needs to change to:

Appendix A: Heading
A.1 Heading
A.1.1 Heading
A.1.1.1 Heading
...

I am comfortable with setting up either one on their own, but when I try to
put the second outline numbering style in the document, the first disappears.
I could use two documents, but then tables of contents and page numbering do
not flow into the second document.

Is there a way easier way of doing this, without going to two documents?

How you approach this depends somewhat on how many outline levels you
actually need. For one way to set it up, seen
http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/numbering/NumberingAppendixes.html. That
method assumes that the number of heading levels in the document plus the
appendix does not exceed nine. If you need just four levels for each, as
shown, you should be fine with Shauna's instructions.

If you need more levels than that, then you will not be able to use Word's
built-in heading styles for all your outline levels. You'll have to create
custom styles for some of the headings. This will be a drawback if you are
wanting to include a "chaper number" in your page number or figure captions,
since only one of Word's built-in heading styles can be used for that
purpose.
