Can I "repair" from a windows CD with SP 1a if I have SP 2?

I'm having a problem with my sound card and I have the same problem with my
on-board sound card.

At some point, I removed the Plug & Play Software Device Enumerator. I did
so because it had a yellow exclamation point next to it in the device
manager. AND I thought it would just come back like if you uninstall your CD
drive with it still connected it will just come back on reboot. Needless to
say, it did not just come back on reboot and I found a thread somewhere on
how to get it back...

==================================
Here's how I re-installed my PNPSDE:
md \temp
cd \temp
copy %windir%\inf\machine.inf \temp\allmachine.inf
copy %windir%\system32\drivers\swenum.sys \temp
copy %windir%\system32\streamci.dll \temp

notepad \temp\allmachine.inf

into cmd line and then opening the allmachine.inf with notepad and erasing
what was on line 20(or so..)
under the line [ControlFlags]

then adding new hardware through the control panel
select pick a list
and click on have a disk
and choose the allmachine.inf file that is in the c:\temp folder
it will give you a new list of devices you can choose and the 'plug and play
software device enumerator'
install it
and then reinstall your soundcard drivers!
done.
================================

It seemed to bring back my PNPSDE without a yellow exclamation point but I
suspect it is the culprit.

I've done all the usual things, like test my speakers [they work] and
install sound drivers from the CD alone, from the CD plus online newer
drivers, downloading the newest directx, and I tried using my onboard sound
card. That used to work but now it doesn't.

So I was thinking of using my SP 1a windows XP disc to do a "repair" to try
to get back my PNPSDE. Questions:
1. I have SP 2. Is this going to be a problem?
2. Will a "repair" even update/fix my PNPSDE problem?
3. Do you have any other advice for fixing my sound card? Of course, I
asked creative technologies for help but tech support is notorious for not
being that helpful...

Any help will be very much appreciated!!!

SNIP

To perform a repair installation you will need to make a new XP cd with sp2
slipstreamed into it.

just google for instructions

First, locate and re-install the chipset drivers for your system's
motherboard. That may actually be where the problem lies, below the
soundcard drivers. And if it *is* the problem, repair installs of XP won't
help because those drivers aren't installed by XP. There should be a CD
that came with your system, or identify the board and download from the
manufacturer's website.

Second, if you have an install CD, consider slipstreaming it to make a new
SP2 CD. To do this easily, you need your install CD, the full SP2 download
(about 250 meg), free drive space, a CD burner, and a program called
AutoStreamer. If you google "slipstream XP", you'll find plenty of
directions, but AutoStreamer is very easy to use.

However, if your system is a Dell, or any of the other manufacturers who
incorporate other updates, the slipstream will likely fail. In that case,
copy the SP2 file to CD and immediately after any sort of system restore or
repair, use that CD to install SP2.
