Can I print on EVERY network printer visible in the Network neighborhood ? When driver installation

Assume a remote (rather old) HP Laser printer is visible in the local Network neigborhood.

However for some unknown reasons I cannot print on this printer.

If the printer is visible in Network Neighborhood does this ALWAYS mean that I should be able to print on it?

Or is it sometimes required to install explicitely an additional driver on the local system?

Are there drivers for local use only resp. are there drivers for network delivery (="server edition") as well ?

Otherwise one and the same driver package should be usable as for local clients as well as for remote programs.

have you set it up as a Network Printer in the Add New Printer wizard?

The answer is "it depends on the printer". Most HP's require local
drivers to be installed. Since you didn't say why you can't print or
what you've already done or how the printer is connected to the network,
I can't be more specific than that. Since the printer is old, XP
probably has built-in drivers for it. If you didn't add the printer
using the Add New Printer wizard, you need to do this. If you tried and
failed, then HP makes an "Install Network Printer Wizard" utility that
is extremely useful for true network printers (TCP/IP).

If you need more help, post back with the missing details.

You should be able to print to it provided that it is functioning. There
are
no "server" drivers - in a print server configuration, the print server
just
serves up the drivers to the client when they connect.

Not quite right - XP installs a minimum local install when you set up the
printer as a Network printer....
