Can I move a notebook computer when it is on?

I was told to put the notebook computer in a standby mode
before moving it. This will prevent damage to the hard
disk drive. However, there is a lot of vibration or
movements occure when using the notebook computer, i.e.
working on the lap, on the airplanes, moving the
notebook from a desk to a couch in a bed room, or even
the action of turning the screen to another viewers. It
is a big burden if I have to turn it off and on in every
few minutes in these spots. What are the best ways to
handle these suitations? Do the tablet cmputers have the
same problem?

Thank you for your help.
