Would it be poosible to install vista oem on a pc already running xp? I know

Yes, but it won't be able to upgrade your existing install, you'd need to
clean install it.

Yes, but it will likely only allow you to do a clean install, not an upgrade
to the existing system.

OEM versions of Windows Vista are not designed to upgrade
over an existing Windows installation. It must be installed on
a newly reformatted drive or partition. Only "retail versions"
of Windows Vista can actually perform an "upgrade".

OEM versions do not have an "upgrade" choice. You have to wipe the disk
clean as you install. You will loose everything you currently have.

How would i start on a formatted drive? Do i just right-click on the c drive
and choose 'format' or is there another way to do it?

I would boot from a floppy or a bootable CD, run FDISK and delete the
existing partition(s).

Essentially you install an OEM version of Windows Vista
as explained here:

Simply boot from the disk, go to advanced disk options, and select format.
Remember, this will delete everything on your hard drive, so you will need
to back up your files.

Once i've installed vista oem will all my drivers be installed from the vista
disk, i.e cd drives, motherboard, soundcard or will i have to download the
drivers for the components on my pc since they were originally installed off
my xp disk.

You should be able to install the OEM copy. It will rename most of your
stuff into a Windows.OLD directory and instlal vista over the top of it. It
will also give you the option of reformatting.

Depends on the hardware. Some are on the installation DVD, some are not.
You should check with the device manufacturer for their Vista drivers.

Even with a custom install? I haven't tried myself, so I'm curious.

Not sure what you're asking Dustin. If XP is installed, boot from the Vista
OEM CD and do a custom install., either to the same or different partition,
creating either a solo installation or a dual boot.

Does it have to be an "empty" drive. Why should it work any different than a
retail copy clean install?

When the op boots with the DVD would it not see the previous operating
system and move the data files out of the install path. I don't mean that it
will do an upgrade as so, but a clean install, with the "Windows Old" folder
left behind.

I apologize if I am repeating someone else's answer but I didn't have time to
read the entire thread. One answer comes to mind so vividly on this subject
that I felt compelled to answer this way:

If you have a legal copy of XP running then stick with it! I have 3 copies
of Vista running (that's debatable) and the only thing they are good for is
to exercise my fingers as I push the "Reset" button on computers to take
Vista out of its recurring hangups that can't be stopped via software.

You're an idiot. You're replying to a thread that hasn't been active
for SIXTEEN MONTHS.

Well nonny numbass I guess that makes two of us. You were apparently
monitoring the same old message too. Thanks for being an idiot with me!

Why do dipsticks like you bother sending your vitriole when it is
unnecessary in the first place. Does it make you feel like "da man?"

You responding brought the post up.
He probably wasn't monitoring it.
Just FYI
