Can I install and register from different XP CDs?

I am putting together a system for my nephew in another state. He is going
to get an XP CD through his college for students. I would like to get
everything (SP2, drivers) installed on the machine and verify it's working
before I send it to him and I'm not sure how fast he will get his CD.

Can I install using the XP CD that I installed my home system with, but not
go through the registration process? And then he register XP with his CD's
license when he gets it? I think you get prompted for the CD license key
during installation, does the registration relies on that information? Or
can he just do a install - repair with his CD?

I'm just trying to get XP on the machine without waiting for him to send me
the student CD. And also not mess up my machine's registration/license.

Thanks

Hi,

You can't do it that way. When you install, you have to provide the key at
that time, whether or not you activate and register (this latter part is
optional, not required). You will need his student media and associated
Product Key to install it for him. You can't simply user yours.

ok thanks, it was worth a shot.

He wants the PC, but I guess he has more pressing things than getting the CD
:)
