Can I found out who is using a document marked read only?

I use a server at work and sometimes need to edit a document that someone
else is using. When this happens, I am only able to access a "read only"
copy. Is it possible to find out which user has the document open, so that I
can email them and ask them to close it?

Yes, it is. See your Network Administrator. If they configure the server
correctly, the message you see saying that the file is "In Use" will contain
the user name of the person who is using it.
