How can I make a document read only

L

Lori

I want to make a document read only. I also need to copy that document and
save it as a new document and make the new document editable.

I have a form document that I do not want to be edited, but want users to
take the form and make changes on their new version.

Display the folder holding the document in Windows Explorer. Right-click the
document, select Properties, and check the Read-only box. When you next open
the doc, you will see "read only" in the title bar of the window. If you try
to save it, you will get a Save-as dialog with which you can save it under a
different name. That new copy will be editable.

Thanks Ted:

Unfortunately, it did not work. When I saved my original document with
another name, the original read-only document was still editable. Any other
suggestions?

Sure, the original doc is editable, but those edits cannot be saved, so your
original will remain unchanged.
