Can I download updates for XP SP2

A friend of mine lives in the country, and has a marginal telephone
line which gives him something like 20k throughput, with lots of
dropped connections.

He bought XP Pro (I think it's Pro) SP2 a year or so ago, but hasn't
done a single update. Is there any way that I can download some
kind of roll-up update package and burn it to a CD for him?

There is no roll-up package of post-SP2 updates. What you will have
to do is to download the individual updates, save them into a folder,
and then burn the folder contents to a CD.

Go to http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp
Choose the "Find updates for Microsoft Windows....." link then in the
next window select the version and service pack level for your
friend's Windows XP.

For Windows XP Home SP2 it showed me 20 critical updates and patches,
23 language items, and 4 recommended updates. The language items can
probably be ignored, but the critical updates are all needed and
possibly the recommended ones as well.

Good luck

I followed the trail to the XP Pro SP2 files, but while it
showed 23 Critical Updates and Service Packs, all but one of
these was an update to the .NET framework in various
languages, and the only real Critical Update was KB899589.
So it doesn't look like this is working. What am I doing
wrong?

I see what you mean. I don't know what is going on, but I suspect
that there is something malfunctioning with the website itself.

I will check it out further.

Go back to the
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp web page,
choose the "Find updates for Microsoft Windows....." link and this
time scroll down the list of Windows XP versions past Windows XP
Professional and you will see a listing for just "Windows XP SP2".
That should give you a list of 70 items in the critical category, from
which you can download what is actually needed.

Good luck
