Comrade

Right now i have an old HP that came with XP Home Edition. I am no
building a computer - but wondered if it is possible, and if so how
to transfer XP to my new computer

I do have the valid cd key (thanks to belarc advisor). And is the sam
possible for Office XP Professional (i have to look for the actual c
- not sure where it is or if i have it - but still have cd-key)

This is really new territory for me - so sorry if i am missin
providing basic information

thx

Sorry, but your HP OEM version of Windows XP
is non-transferable to a different computer. You'll
need to purchase a new "Full Version" of Windows XP
for installation on your new computer.

The Windows that came with your HP is BIOS locked.
About 30 seconds into the install you will receive a message that you can
not install an HP version of Windows on a non-HP computer.

You will need to do bare metal install on your new machine when it
is built, but unfortuately OEM licenses are not transferable, so you
need to purchase a new one.

That is really messed up.

Not really. The "license" for XP was issued to HP for installation on
their machines and ONLY their machines... probably at a very reduced
cost. Support for the product is via HP, not Microsoft.

If you are able to put it in a different machine, HP would have to
support it with hardware that they might not be familiar with.

Thus the copy of XP on that machine is locked to the original
mainboard, cpu, hard drive combo.

No you bought an HP with their version of XP [OEM software], don't feel
bad I wish
I had $1.00 for every time I've had to explain MS's licensing ideology to
someone who thought they could use a software license on their
machinetheir kids, uncle Joe's, Gran's etc - but it doesn't cut the
mustard with MS I'm afraid.
Basically ONE LICENSE can be used on ONE PC.

Yep.

no wonder people dont like them....

i understand and can appreciate that they don't want 1 copy being o
multiple computers - but what the heck - i just wanted to put it o
my new machine - and was gonna reformat the old hardrive and slave i
in

guess i'll give linux a try. and stick with mozilla and winam

You spent all that money building a new computer
and now you are considering skimping on the
operating system....really doesn't make much sense.

Not wanting to pay twice for the same thing doesn't make sense to you?
Are you rich, stupid or both?

MS rule that only one copy of XP per computer is greedy. No wonder Gates
is the richest man in the world. Being as I have no choice, I only have
one per computer but the idea of "renting" software is a scam. The fact
that no retail store says you are buying a license and, instead, says
you are buying software is not exactly truth in advertising and 99% of
the people think they're buying just that, software as advertised.

The fact that you *approve* of this scam is pitiful.

Since it is quite evident you possess zero (-0-) knowledge
of the different types of Windows XP licensing arrangements,
please refrain from adding your silly comments to a post
in which the OP is seeking useful advice.

What if he got ahold of a slipstreamed CD and used his old KEY on a new
computer?

Not a requirement to buy into the scam.

If and when you respond intelligently to my "silly comments", we can
then discuss them in a civilized manner.

What doesnt make sense is that I already have a copy of XP - just tha
i didnt know that it was tied specifically to only one machine.

Support from HP? Why in the heck would i go to HP for suppor
concerning XP

Well at least i've learned to do things myself instead of being forc
fed a bunch of crap that i have no control over. Now i wont have t
deal with all those "bundles" that come on retail machine
that are nothing short of a huge pain in the butt just to get ri
of

I swear msn messenger wants you to update every other week, and i gav
up on IE along time ago. And now i have to buy what is basically th
same OS that i already have merely cause my current computer i
outdated and i want to upgrade

I mean this isnt even product self-cannibalization - funny how neithe
HP nor M$ clearly state the restrictions on the "license
you buy

legal? yes. ethical, no
n

You can read the HP OEM Windows XP End-User License
Agreement by going to Start > Run and type:
WINVER , and hit enter.

It will essentially state:

LICENSE MAY NOT BE SHARED, TRANSFERRED TO OR
USED CONCURRENTLY ON DIFFERENT COMPUTERS.
The SOFTWARE is licensed with the COMPUTER as a single
integrated product and may only be used with the COMPUTER. If
the SOFTWARE is not accompanied by HARDWARE, you may not use
the SOFTWARE.

Hey i got burned - i realize it

but dont for a second think that 99% of people understand any o
that

But then again M$ and unfortunately many other companies do not wan
informed consumers

That is the bottom line as i see it

The OS is perhaps the most essential integral part of a computer - an
at no time did i feel that the salesperson nor the "fine
print ever tried to make this information easily available

I was an uneducated consumer - that was my fault. Now at least i'v
gained enough knowledge to make informed decisions.

Henceforth my decisions will be to use alternatives to M$ products

But i do agree with the previous user that ms +retail computer maker
are running a scam. I'm done drinking the kool-aid

The Product Key affixed to a HP computer is only
valid when you reinstall the operating system on
the original HP computer. You cannot use that
Product Key with any other Windows XP CD.
